Those hood were a not-uncommon aftermarket accessory for the beetle to make them look a little like an old Ford. It works pretty good with a woodie conversion.
Could be worse, could be a Rolls Royce grille.

Yep, the running gear and most of the body from the B pillar forward is retained and the rear is custom built with a false floor hiding the motor.

Haven’t the foggiest. I know so little about old VWs; I just saw one of these a while back so I already done had the research done done and did.
